The ancestry of Sir John of Montgomery, here treated, cannot be satisfactorily identified from surviving evidence. Stirnet identifies him as the son of Sir John of Montgomery and his wife Helena of Kent but acknowledges the suggestion made by Bo Gabriel Montgomery, [Origin and history of the Montgomerie] that two generations intervened between Sir John of Montgomery, here treated, and Sir John of Montgomery Stirnet: Montgomery 02

The late Reverend John Anderson identified Sir John Montgomery, here treated, as the younger brother and successor of Robert of Montgomery He says that the name of Sir John's wife is not certainly known, but acknowledges the unverified claim made in the Memorials of the Montgomerys, that she was: "a daughter of William Moray of Bothwell." The Scots Peerage III: 425 The brothers, Robert and John, are noticed in each others company in the witness list of a charter in favour of the monks of Paisley which belongs to the time of Walter son of Alan, the third hereditary steward of Scotland, 1204-41.
