Sir Lawrence Stoughton was the 2nd Baronet of Stoughton and 13th Lord of the Manors of Stoughton and Stoke.
He married in 1691 and died a few months later, leaving no children. The baronetcy was entailed on the male line and so became extinct. A similar entail on the Stoughton estates was lifted by Act of Parliament so they could be sold to provide dowries for his sisters. The family home was then a mansion called "Stoughton Place, " situated on an eminence near the middle of the manor. The site is now a plowed field of about six acres called "Stoughton Garden, " with a part of the ancient moat remaining. The family's ancient monuments are preserved in the Stoughton Chapel, in the east end of the north aisle of the church at Stoke.
In 1698 the manor was sold to Edward Hubbald, and eventually came into the possession of the Budgett family. In 1925 the Budgetts sold the mansion and park to the town of Guildford, but retained the manor.
