  • Wyvell’s grandfather, Marmaduke†, married a coheiress of Sir Ralph FitzRandall, who had himself married a coheiress of the last Lord Scrope of Masham. Constable Burton, a little over five miles from Richmond, had been part of the old Masham estate. When Wyvell succeeded his father he did not enter immediately into the whole estate, much of the property, including Constable Burton, having been assigned to his mother, Margaret, for life. She was a niece of Henry Lord Scrope of Bolton, and it was no doubt with Scrope’s approval that Wyvell was returned for Richmond. He was probably absent from the 1584 session. The journal for 4 Dec. states that he ‘is lately fallen very sick and not able to give his attendance on this House till he shall have recovered better health’. Nothing further of interest has been ascertained about him, most of the contemporary references being to his dealings in property. He was living in London in 1595, but spent his last years in Yorkshire, where he died in January 1617. His eldest son, Christopher, having died five years previously, the second son, Marmaduke, inherited the estate. In his will, drawn up in August 1614 and proved in March 1617, Wyvell had made arrangements for £200 to be spent on his funeral. He was buried in the north aisle of Masham church, where he had erected a ‘cumbrous and costly’ monument.2
