About Sir Radulph de Gorges de Meurville

Sir Radulph de Gorges de Meurville flourished in the latter part of the 11th century. "The name of Ralph de Gorges name appears on nearly all the lists of those who fought at the Battle of Hastings, 1066."   Died after 1082 (last mention in charters).  He does not appear in the Domesday Book as an English land owner.  Also known as Ralph de Gorges; in Latin as Radolfus de Gorgis; and French as Seigneur Radulph de Gorges.

The House of Gorges is an ancient English family with Norman origins. Radulph, Lord of the Château de Gorges (or in French, Seigneur Radulph de Gorges) came over to England from Gorges in the canton of Périers in Normandy in the army of William the Conqueror in the year 1066 and acquired a knighthood. He had thus started the history of the noble family of Gorges in England.

(Gorgeise in Leland's list) from Gaurges in the Cotentin. This family originally bore a whirlpool or gurges (as may be seen in their sepulchral chapel at Cliefden): but adopted the Lozengy Or and Azure of Morville on the marriage of Ralph de Gorges with the heiress of John de Morville, temp. Hen. III.

'Pedigree', which acknowledges some uncertainty on the first generations, favours spelling the family name as Georges for those early generations and George thereafter. The spelling change is only shown for the Georges of Baunton.
