1. RICHARD WHETEHILL of Calais was born about 1410, in the reign of
King Henry IV. He had “ completed his sixtieth year” on November 24, 1470,
when Pope Paul II granted to him, “ layman, of the diocese of Lincoln ,” per
mission not to fast in Lent, nor in the Ember season , nor on vigils or other
fast days , provided that on the said days he abstain from flesh and give an
alms. On August 6, 1471 , with a great number of knights, squires, merchants and soldiers who were his fellow townsmen , he received a general pardon from King Edward IV.
