About Sir Robert Singleton

Geni curators do not allow for Robert Singleton bc1575-90 member of the 2nd Virginia Company to be connected to Robert Singleton of Samlesbury, Lancashire, England born 1552 d1623. The Samlesbury Robert married Anne Southworth of Samlesbury and she died in 1619. Robert was then charged for Roman Catholic practices and surrendered his Lower Brockholes property in 1621 as payment for the fine. Curators have searched thoroughly the marriage of Robert and Anne Southworth and the siblings of Anne and have found that Robert and Anne both died childless. They had lost Upper Brockholes property as well with no issue surviving and with Robert being illegitimate. According to the Bedinger Washington/Presidential Family Trees Sir Robert Singleton was from Sussex near Chichester, Sussex and the village of Singleton there(implied birthplace). Geoff Baines of England reports that there was an unrelated Singleton family line from Sussex. They did not come from Brockholes, Lancashire. H. Sir Robert Singleton was a Charter member of the 2nd Virginia Colonist Company in 1609. He probably patented land in Gloucester Co., VA, Gloucester Bay, Mobjack at that time. He is listed in the records of the Virginia Colonist Company at the Guild Hall Library in London.

Current wisdom is that he never came to America however he is listed on the Colonial America Pre-1790 CD #136 as:Virginia Colony, 1607, Singleton, Robert - and in 1611, Shingleton, Robert.

Kathleen Taylor has seen old family records and a bible (now lost) which indicate Sir Robert came to America then returned to England.

Sir Robert Singleton became involved in the Colony of Virginia Company in 1609 and afterwards back in England he was involved in the support of King Charles I after 1625 leading up to the civil war with the Puritans against the King and the so-called Royalists like Sir Robert. Possibly as a result, Sir Robert was indeed knighted in the 1630's or 1640's and was sometimes called Robert of London as is recorded. His sons were not independent until the mid 1630s. The sons probably remained in London until they left for Virginia about 1635 or 1637. The H. Singleton Bedinger "Washington/Presidential" family tree showing the first Robert says he was probably born in 1575 in Sussex and was called Sir Robert Singleton of Sussex. He came from Singleton village between Midhurst and Chichester, West Sussex. No father is given for this Robert. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hutch/DABBS/Singl...
