About Sir Thomas Copley, Kt.
Thomas was an M.P. for Gatton. He seems to have been a Protestant during the time of Queen Mary, and was committed to the Sergeant-at-Arms for speaking "unreverent words" in the House of Commons. Thomas was a Catholic recusant, who spent much of his life in the Netherlands and Flanders. He was made a Baron by the King of France at Paris in 1577, afterwards styled Lord Copley.
