Sir Thomas Paulet, of Cossington

"Won" Melplash Manor from the Moore family through an arranged marriage to Mary Moore. Mary's father, Sir Thomas Moore, had been the High Sheriff of Dorset and Somerset. Apparently, one evening, he thought it would be amusing to order the release of all the prisoners in the local jail. This was done, the consequence being, that in return for a pardon, the Lord Treasurer, Lord Paulet, required that he marry one of his daughters, well dowered, to one of his sons. Melplash Manor was part of the match.
