  • Sir Thomas Wingfield, Knt. second son of Sir Robert Wingfield, of Letheringham, Knt. succeeded in the estate of his elder brother, Sir Anthony, who died without issue, in 1605. Sir Thomas married two wives: first, Ratcliffe, daughter of Sir Gilbert Gerrard, of Gerrard's Bromley, co. Stafford, Knt. Master of the Rolls; and, secondly, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Drue Drury, of Riddlesworth, co. Norfolk, Knt. By his first wife, the lady here represented, he had only one child, Anne, who married Thomas, son and heir of Alexander Standish, of Peele, co. Lancaster, Esq. Sir Thomas Wingfield was knighted at Greenwith, July 13th, 1606, and died 22 January, 1609.

Captain of the guard to Edward VI, he was sent by the Lords of the Council to Windsor in 1549 to induce the king to remove his uncle, Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, as Lord Protector.76 Executor of his father’s will. Named as overseer of the will of Robert I Gosnold 1572. Knighted ?2 Oct. 1553. A J.P. for Suffolk from c.1559. Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk 1560-1. M.P. for Suffolk 1563 and 1572.77 Taxed on £80 in lands in Letheringham, 1568.78 Deputy Lieutenant for Suffolk 1585. Sir Robert married 2ndly, after 1570, Bridget (Ann), widow of Thomas Fleetwood of London and The Vache, Chalfont St Giles, Bucks. (Master of the Mint) and daughter of Sir John Spring of Hitcham, Suffolk. Children by his 1st wife:
    • 1. Sir Anthony (II) Wingfeld. Sonne & heyr. Born c.1554. Matriculated a fellow- commoner from Peterhouse, Cambridge, Michaelmas 1566. Admitted at Gray’s Inn 1572. M.P. for Orford 1571, 1572, for Dunwich 1584 and 1586, and for Suffolk 1589.82 A J.P. for Suffolk from c.1583. A Deputy Lieutenant and commissioner of musters c.1596. Knighted 1597.83 Sheriff of Suffolk 1597-8. In 1601 the Privy Council described him as ‘well affected in religion’, and he was one of those responsible for organizing the removal of recusant prisoners from Wisbech to Framlingham. Of Goodin’s or Godwin’s in Hoo. Died 29 Dec. 1605, s.p., bur. at Letheringham. Sir Anthony Wingfeilde of Godwyns in Hoo, Suffolk, will dated 18 Oct. 1605, proved 14 Feb. 1605/6 P.C.C. (PROB11/107) – requested burial at Letheringham; his brother Thomas to be repaid a debt out of annual rent from the manor of Dullingham in Cambs ‘as allotted’ to Sir Robert his father. IPM 1606-7.84 Married Anne (Mary) Birde, daughter of Thomas (John) Birde (Burde) of Denston and London, Customer of London. Executrix of her husband’s will – she was to have his manor of Scaleshoo [Scales Hoo or How in Howe, Norfolk]85 and his moiety of ffyttons [the manor Fittons in Wiggenhall St Germans, Norfolk]86 for 5 years and then an annuity of £60. She remarried c.1609 (as his 3rd wife) Thomas Clenche esq. of Holbrooke, Suffolk, and Lincoln’s Inn, London, M.P. for Suffolk in 1621 (d. 1624).87 She died 2 Aug. 1626, buried as ‘the Lady Anne Wingfield’ 5 Aug. 1626 at Letheringham.

He ‘lived in Easton during the life of Sir Anthony Wingfield, his eldest brother ... After his Brother’s death, He removed to Letheringham’.88 Of Easton 1601. Named in his brother Anthony’s will – to be repaid a debt of £300 and given ‘all my armour and my tent with all my ymplements of warre’. Knighted 13 July 1606 at Greenwich by King James I. Sheriff of Suffolk 1610, but died in office (replaced by Sir George Le Hunt of Little Bradley). ‘Died of the Smal-Pox, when High-Sherif of Suffolk upon 22 January 1609’,89 bur. 23 Jan. 1609/10 at Letheringham, M.I. Sir Thomas Wyngfeilde of Letheringham, will dated 16 Jan. 1609, proved 3 Feb. 1609/10 P.C.C. (PROB 11/115) – his executors were to be his wife, and his ‘loving kinsmen and friends’ Edmond Poley of Badley, Humphrey Wingfield esq. of Brantham and Thomas Wingfield gent. of Easton. IPM 1609-10.90 Married 1stly, Radcliff (Radclyffe), daughter of Sir Gilbert Gerrard of Bromley Gerard in Staffordshire and Ince in Lancashire, Master of the Rolls (1581-93), by Anne, daughter and heir of Thomas Ratcliffe of Winmarleigh, Lancashire.91 Died 18 July 1601, buried at 19 July 1601 at Easton, monumental brass in the chancel. Married (as his 1st wife) Thomas Standish esq. of Duxbury in Lancashire, son and heir of Alexander Standish of Peele in Lancashire. Born c.1594. A Puritan. M.P. for Liverpool 1626 and for Preston 1640-42.92 Died 1642.
  • Sir Thomas married 2ndly, 1601, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Drue Drury of Riddlesworth, Norfolk and Linstead, Kent, by his 2nd wife, Katherine, daughter and heiress of William Finch of Linstead.93 Born 1584. Named as a co-executor of her husband’s will (but did not act), she was given the ‘profittes of my parke and Lodge in Letheringham and Wickham’ during her son’s minority. She remarried 9 Aug. 1610, Henry Reynolds gent. of Belstead (b. 1581). This marriage was a failure and they were in dispute by 1614.94 She died 1620.

Born 7 July 1600. Educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge 1617, BA 1620. Admitted at Gray’s Inn 1619. Made a hall, parlour, stairs etc and converted Sigers into Grundisburgh Hall. Captain of foot (parliamentary) 1643, colonel by 1645; commanded a regiment at the siege of Colchester. Commissioner for sequestrations in Suffolk 1643 for the execution of ordinances 1643, for levying of money 1643, for the Eastern Association 1643, for assessment in Suff. 1644-52, 1657, Aug. 1660-death, Ipswich 1663-death, for new model ordinance in Suff. 1645. Justice of the Peace for Suffolk by 1650-3, 1657-death. M.P. for Suffolk 1654, 1656 and for Ipswich 1661- 1673.95 In January 1660 he signed and presented the Suffolk petition for a free Parliament to George Monck. Sold his Ipswich house to Francis Bacon and purchased the manor of Grundisburgh. Died 13 (25) Nov. 1673, buried at Grundisburgh. Esq. of the City of London, will dated 13 Sep. 1673, proved 5 June 1676 P.C.C. (PROB11/352/55).

  • The last will and testament of Sir Thomas Wingfield of Letheringham, Suffolk, knight, dated 16 January 1609/10
  • Testator directs as follows:
  • My body to be buried at the discretion of my executors.
  • ‘I will and bequeathe all my Mannors, Landes, Tenementes and Hereditamentes with theire appurtenances whatsoever I have now in possession, Remaynder, or Revertion in the Counties of Norffolk, Suffolk, Cambridge or els where within the Realme of England’ to my executors until my son Anthony Wingefield reaches the age of 21. If he dies before that age, my executors are to hold the property until he would have reached 21, and to use the income to pay my debts and perform this my last will and testament.
  • ‘I will that my Wife shall take the profittes of my parke and Lodge in Letheringham and Wickham untill my sonne Anthony come to the age of one and twentie yeres’.
  • To my daughter Anne Wingfield, £1500 to be paid to her by my executors out of the rents, issues and profits of my aforesaid lands and tenements when she is 21.
  • To my daughter Elizabeth, the like sum of £1500 to be paid to her when she is 21.
  • To Cicely my daughter, the like sum of £1500 to be paid to her when she is 21.
  • To Katherine my daughter, the like sum of £100 to be paid to her when she is 21.
  • All my said children are to be brought up by my executors with the profits of my manors, lands and tenements until they are 21.
  • To my wife, all my goods and chattels, plate and household stuff.
  • If the profits of my said lands and tenements are not sufficient for raising my children’s portions before my son Anthony reaches the age of 21, then my son is to pay the residue when he is 21. If he refuses to do so, those of my children who have not been paid shall enter into his lands and tenements and take the profits until their portions are paid.
  • My loving wife and my loving kinsmen and friends Edmond Poley of Badley and Humfrey Wingefeild of Brantham, Esquires, and Thomas Wingfield of Easton, gent., are to be executors of this my last will and testament.
  • If any of my children die before the age of 21, their portion is to be equally divided among the survivors.
