About Sir Thomas de Gorges of Powerstock

First proven ancestor of the House of Gorges in England. His lands in Normandy confiscated due to "treason" by supporting King John of England, Duke of Normandy, as liege man of Philip Augustus. His castle was demolished in 1212. By 1231 Henry lll of England made him warden of the royal manor of Powerstock in Dorset, a post with a military establishment. After 1236 Joan his widow sued in Normandy for her dower rights but it was determined by the court of Rouen that she was heiress in her own right, and that Sir Thomas' Normandy lands reverted to the French crown.
