About Sir Walter Bentley, English Knight
Bentley married Jeanne, the widow of Geoffrey de Châteaubriant VIII, Guy of Penthièvre, Olivier de Clisson, the daughter of Maurice IV Montaigu of Belleville and Palluau and Létice de Parthenay, they had no issue
Bentley was a son of John Bentley of Yorkshire. He fought during the early stages of the Second War of Scottish Independence. Walter served as King Edward III of England's sergeant in France during 1339.[1] As part of William de Bohun, Earl of Northampton's retinue, Walter served in Brittany in 1342
The Battle of Mauron was fought in 1352 between an Anglo-Breton force and France. The Anglo-Bretons were victorious. The battle took place in the context of the Hundred Years War. With the Franco-Breton claimant, Charles de Blois, a prisoner, and the Anglo-Breton claimant (Jean de Montfort) a minor, the English were attempting to rule Brittany in the name of their protégé.
Bentley *s widow, Joan, " the Lady of Clisson," only survived him a few weeks. His stepson, Oliver (who had returned to Brittany from England in 1358), suc- ceeded to their property. He afterwards became High Constable of France, and died enormously wealthy at his Castle of Josselin in 1404.*
Sir Thomas Bentley, chivaler-f* (the son of Geoffrey Bentley), who also took part in the wars in Brittany, long outlived the events just related, and died in York- shire in I 378, and his widow, Joan, founded a chantry in Beverley Minster in his memory.
