SIR WILLIAM HAMILTON OF WHITELAW

Member of the Scottish Parliament; Senator of the College of Justice, where he sat as Lord Whitelaw

Biographical Summary

Fifth son of John Hamilton of Bangour, and Margaret, daughter of James Hamilton of West Park. He was admitted advocate 13th December 1664, being according to Pitmedden, the first candidate that was publicly examined on the civil law by the dean of faculty and other examinators conform to the public examination act of sederunt. He left the Bar on account of the appeals, and was re admitted 8th January 1676. He was appointed an Ordinary Lord, on the resignation of Sir Robert Sinclair of Stevenson, and took his seat as Lord Whitelaw, 19th December 1693; and had also shortly afterwards the honour of Knighthood conferred on him by King William......He was appointed Justice-Clerk 31st October 1704, on the resignation of Adam Cockburn of Ormiston, which office he held for a very short period, his death having taken place on the 14th December that same year."
