About Sir William Jenney or Jenne

SIR WILLIAM JENNEY AND FACTS ABOUT HIS LIFE

Sir William JENNEY was born in 1420 in Knodishall, Suffolk during Henry V's (1413 - 1422) reign.

  • Probably King Henry VI (1422 - 1461) made him a Knight.
  • He also served under King Edward IV (1461 - 1483).
  • He died on 23 Dec 1483 in Knodishall, Suffolk, England.

The following biographical sketch appeared in 'Biographia Juridica':

  • His name was sometimes spelled Gyney, and more frequently Genney, and
  • he was the son of JOHN JENNEY Esquire, of Knoddishall in Suffolk, and MAUD BOKYLL or BOKILL , daughter and heir of JOHN BOKILL of Friston.
  • He became one of the Governors of Lincoln's Inn in 1446. His practice at the bar began at least as early as 1439, Henry VI, that being the date of his first appearance in the Year Books.
  • In November 1463, and in the next year are long arguments relative to the legality of an outlawry awarded against John Paston on the suit of Jenney. Another discussion arose in 1471, the main question was whether Sir John Paston should proceed against the serjeant by bill or writ. He shows himself an acute lawyer, and his practice in the courts was very extensive. Although, at one time the King was favourable to the Pastons, this did not prevent the advance to which the serjeant's legal attainments entitled him. And, he was a Judge of the King's Bench. The date of his elevation could not have been before Easter Term 1481, under Edward IV. He was re-appointed at the commencement of the reigns of Edward V. and Richard III, and sat in the court during the first six months of the latter reign, dying on December 23, 1483.
  • His first wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Cawse, Esquire
    • Elizabeth was born in 1426. She died after 1466.
  • His second was Eleanor, daughter of John Sampson, Esq., and widow of Robert Ingleys, Esq.

DOES SIR WILLIAM JENNEY HAVE A MONUMENT?

  • According to John Weever (1631), there was a monument at the church of St. Peter at Theberton to Sir William Jermy, a Knight and Elisabeth his wife, who died on 23 Dec 1483.
    • It's wording was: Hic iacet Willelmus Jermey miles, vnus Infticiar. Domini Regis de Banco fao, et Elifabeth vxos eius, qui quidem Willelmus obijt xxiij die Decembris, Anno Domini Mcccclxxxiij. Quorum animabus propitietur Deus. Amen. However, in the "Chronicles of Theberton", Henry Doughty states that Jermey is a clerical error for Jenney. Sir William Jenney was one of the Justices of the Kings Bench.
