Sister Ma.Asuncion (baptismal name: Adelaida) was a nun of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. She lost her parents at an early age, and was under the care of her aunt, Dona Ambrosia Kalaw. She finished her studies as a pharmacist,and became a Franciscan oblate in 1927 despite the objections of her family who saw the need for her financial assistance to her nephews and nieces. In 1936,she took her final vows as a nun of the order.
As a nun, she was known for her humility and her love for the poor. She spoke Tagalog, English and Spanish fluently.Her religious life was spent in the following communities: the Virgo Fidelis Convent (1936-1943); the Regina Angelorum Convent in Sampaloc, Manila (as infirmarian and nurse of the dispensary 1943-1951);the St. Francis Convent in Baguio (sent there to recover from sickness 1951-1952);back to the Regina Angelorum Convent (1952-1962); the St.Francis Convent (sent there to recover from sickness,1962);back to the Regina Angelorum Convent (1962-1970) and finally, the Immaculate Heart Novitiate in Tagaytay City (1970-1972). She spent the last two years of her religious life in Tagaytay where she was seen by her fellow nuns as faithful to the community exercises. At the daybreak of January 19,1972, Sister Asuncion passed away as she repeated the names of Jesus,Mary and Joseph.
