Smith Thompson Van Buren was the youngest son of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States. Smith lived at his father's Kinderhook, NY estate Lindenwald, in the late 1840's and early 1850's. A busy law career brought him southward. He married Ellen James in 1842. She died in 1849. In 1855, he married Henrietta Eckford Irving, a niece of prominent author Washington Irving. Smith would help produce a number of Van Buren's grandchildren.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 16 2021, 17:16:41 UTC
