Solomon Alpert

SOL ALPERT ALPERT, SOL, "Poppie," age 94, of Altamonte Springs, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at Hospice of the Comforter. He was born on March 10, 1915, in Riverdale, IL to the late Joseph and Kate, nee Goldstein, Alpert. Following school and the outbreak of WWII, Sol enlisted in the US Army to serve his country, where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Sol returned to Chicago where he married his sweetheart, Gertrude, nee Levin, who survives him, on April 13, 1946. In Chicago, Sol was a scrap metal operations supervisor as well as a Deputy Sheriff for Cook County, IL. Sol was a gregarious and gentle man who was quick with a quip or a joke that enlivened any situation. Among his notable achievements, Sol once bowled a perfect 300 game. In addition to his wife, Sol is survived by his sons, Alan (Nancy) and Jeffrey (Caryn) of Longwood; and his grandchildren, Kate Dimitri, Kim, Jason, Eric, Max, McKenzie and Joshua; as well as his sister, Billie Foote. Sol was predeceased by his brothers, Max, Alex and Clarence and sisters, Sissy, Jean, Dorothy and Rose. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Sol Alpert to Hospice of the Comforter, 605 Montgomery Rd., Altamonte Springs, 32714 or Jewish Family Services, 2100 Lee Rd., Winter Park, 32789. Funeral Services, with full military honors, will be on Monday, March 1, at 2 p.m., at Beth Shalom Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
