About Solomon Bates, Sr.
Note: Lived on Broadway and built the house that was afterwards occupied by his son Solomon. Of this house, which was a curiosity in its way, is found the description in the Gospel Banner of Maine, from the pen of the Reverend George Bates, a descendant: "It was substantially built, mostly of oak timber and evidently by a ship carpenter. The walls were constructed of plank, grooved together and tree-nailed to the sills and plates. The posts were all kneed in the same manner that ships are kneed."
