About Solomon Etting

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Etting

Solomon, as an elected member of the Baltimore City Council, was the first Jew to hold public office in t he state of Maryland. His name is in the Baltimore section of the 1843 list of first subscribers to the Occident and American Jewish Advocate. See http://www.jewish-history.com/Occident/volume1/july1843/subscrib.htm for more names. He also helped organize the successful campaign that, in 1823, eliminated a clause in the Maryland constitution requiring public office holders to affirm the divinity of Christ when taking their oath of office, a requirement that effectively prohibited observant Jews from holding office, according to the Database of Early American Jewish Portraits

Solomon Etting was on the Board of Managers of the Maryland Colonization Society, 1831-1847.
