About Solomon David GARSON

Obituary, Jewish Chronicle, May 17th 1895, page 19:

A correspondent writes : The Jewish community of this city has sustained a very heavy loss by the death of Mr. Solomon David Garson, who has during the last 18 years resided in Manchester. A native of Tetuan (Morocco), Mr. S. D. Garson went as a young man to Gibraltar, where he was for many years a prominent and respected merchant. Since he established himself in Manchester, be has been actively identified with the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, in the affairs of which be always took a deep interest, and for several years he has been a member of the Committee of Management. Mr. Garson will be long remembered for his quiet and unobtrusive piety, and his well-directed but very unostentatious charity. In him the poor, and especially the deserving poor of this city have lost a true and very kind-hearted friend. It will be impossible to recount the numerous occasions on which he interested himself in the affairs of some poor struggling trader, pedlar or hawker, whose after success was entirely due to the generous assistance of Mr. Garson at a critical moment. Faithful in the performance of his religious duties, a regular daily attendant at divine worship thrice a day in all weather, Solomon David Garson has bequeathed to his sorrowing family an honoured name which it will be their privilege to cherish and perpetuate. Mr. Samuel Garson, the eldest son of the deceased gentleman, has this week been elected to fill the place of his late father on the Committee of Management of the Manchester Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, and the second son, Mr. David Garson, has for several years been an active worker on the Manchester Jewish Board of Guardians and the Shechita Board.
