Parentage: Timeline of Sonja's father (Carl Adolph Dahl) shows he was in North America at the time of her conception in Sweden. He had been there for six years. Sonja and her mother (Anna Charlotta Karlsson) are documented to have both been living with Anna's parent's at the time Carl returned from North America. Therefore Sonja's biological father is unknown to us and Carl must have adopted her.
Marriage to - Knute, a baker, had left/divorced his first wife after they emigrated from Sweden to the USA. He told Thelma it was "because she did not give him any children". He then married a woman in Redwing, MN (this marriage lasted 3 months and he told Thelma he married her so "he would have someone to feed the chickens"). He then went back to Sweden, impressing people with a fancy Dodge car (according to Schubert) and married Sonja (who spoke no English). Sonja gave birth to Oscar in Sweden and Thelma was born in Saugus, MA. Knute disavowed being the father of Sonja's third child. Knute's brothers said he was crazy and suggested he be institutionalized. Sonja became despondent after Arthur's birth and being thrown out of the house. Sonja attempted suicide by jumping off a bridge with Arthur but the police intervened. Shortly thereafter she died of pulmonary tuberculosis.
