NEW ULM REVIEW June 13, 1917

The death of Mrs. Sophia Backer, widow of the late George Backer, pioneer residents of Milford township, died Saturday, June 9, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Heimann, in Fairfax, after an illness of nine weeks. The prime cause of death was old age.

Mrs. Backer, whose maiden name was Sophia Bettigh, was born in Saxony, Germany, in 1834, and came to America in 1851, when 17 years old, making her home in Cincinnati. The year following her arrival there,in 1852, she was married to Mr. Backer, who preceded her in death in 1903. In 1860 they came to Brown County, settling on a homestead in Milford township. The family lived there at the time of the Indian Uprising and were among the farmers who came to New Ulm to escape the Red Men, and were here during the battles of August, 1862.

For the past several years Mrs. Backer had divided her time among her children, living with each for a time. Since last fall she had been with her daughter at Fairfax.

Mrs. Backer was the mother of 8 children, 7 of whom survive her. A son, Fred Backer, died in this city about 5 years ago. The surviving children are as follows: David Backer, St. Paul; Mrs. William Strickler, Clements, Minn.; George Backer, Minneapolis; Otto Backer, St. Paul; John Backer, New Ulm; Mrs. Charles Heimann, Fairfax; August Backer, who occupies the old homestead in Milford.

The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in this city Monday afternoon, Rev. C.J. Albrecht officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery.
