About Sophia Bendigte Christina Jacobsen

Sophia Bendigte Christina [Kristina] was born to Martin Larsson and Ingrid Nordstrom on 15 May 1861 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Siblings: Lars Martin (1849-1877), Laurentia Christina(1850-1855), Erick Martin (1851-1918), Junius Martin (1854-1925), and Hans Johan Zacharias (1859-1896). The missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints found the Larsson family and taught them and on August 13, 1855 her parents joined the church which made them very unpopular in that area, so around 1857 they left Sweden and moved to Copenhagen, Denmark where Hans Johan and Sophia were born. The family changed the spelling of their last name from Larsson to Larsen at that time. Her mother passed away in Copenhagen in 1872 and shortly after that her older brother Erick Martin Larsen left for America but later came back to Norway on a mission for the Church. When he finished his mission, he stopped in Denmark and helped some of his family members to immigrate to America as well. She along with her father and some of her brothers came to the United States in 1877. Following are some details from "A Compilation of General Voyage Notes" concerning the voyage to America. "The first company of the season's emigration from Scandinavia sailed from Copenhagen, June 21, 1877, in two steamships, namely, the 'Argo' and the 'Pacific.' The greater part of the emigrants went on board the 'Argo,' while a small company, mostly emigrants from the Christiania and Goteborg Conferences, took passage on the 'Pacific.' About 6:30 p.m. the 'Argo' steamed out of the harbor and was soon afterwards followed by the 'Pacific.' After a successful voyage across the North Sea, both ships arrived safely in Hull, England, on Sunday, June 24th, the 'Argo' at 9 o'clock a.m. and the 'Pacific' at 8 o'clock p.m. The emigrants landed the following day (June 25th) and proceeded at once by railroad to Liverpool, where they boarded the steamship 'Wisconsin', together with a number of British, German, Swiss, and Dutch Saints". The 'Wisconsin' sailed from Liverpool, June 27th, and arrived in New York, July 7th. From New York the journey was continued by rail westward the same day and the emigrants arrived safe and well in Ogden and Salt Lake City, on July 14, 1877. Sophia married Jacob Peter Jacobsen, 15 May 1885 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They became the parents of: Sophia Ingeborg Jacobsen (1886-1926), Jacob George Jacobsen (1889-1960), Lillian Anna [Jacobsen] McNeil(1890-1961), Eleanor Jacobsen (1892-1959), Clara [Jacobsen] Bower (1894-1974), Pearl M. [Jacobsen] Dick (1897-1969), Lew Wallace Jacobsen (1900-1962) and a stillborn son Jacobsen (1902-1902). Her husband Jacob was employed as a Compositor and a Printer for a printing office and the family moved around a lot. Between the time they were married in 1885 until the 1910 Census Record, the Jacobsen family had lived in Utah, California, Idaho, Nebraska, Illinois, Utah and back to Illinois where Jacob and Sophia remained for the rest of their lives. Sophia passed away 11 May 1924 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum in River Grove, Cook, Illinois. As of 2014, her grave remains unmarked. Note: This is an UNMARKED GRAVE
