About Sophie Bergmann
"She was in many ways the opposite to my father, kind, considered, devoted to her family, relatives and friends. We children really loved her whereas our father was more a person of respect. She was our confidante and we would discuss everything with her, and she would listen. She was the one who brought us up and educated us, and my father would let her. Such things as table manners, for instance, she thought were important, how to hold fork and spoon, not to slurp your coffee, in other words good manners, and my father sometimes lost his patience over things like that."
