About Sophie Grossman
When most of the family had gone to America, Sophie (Shifrie) and Bubbie Libby left Horodetz to live with Aron and Chana Malka Perkovitzky Rosenbaum. Sophie lived with them until she married, and always related how wonderful Chana Malka was to her. Since Sophie's father was not alive, and she had no dowry the matchmaker tried to get a husband for her. Her daughter, Anne Lerman, told me that she didn't know if her mother was" in love" with her father at the time of their maniage, but they had had a good life. Sophie's husband, Itzik Hoyzman, was a first cousin to Philip Zelin, whom he introduced to Eva Rosenbawn. Philip and Eva were married, but had no children. She was like a mother to Anne's family, and she kept in touch with all of the family. Sophie remained in Drohitczyn until her husband, Itzik, who went to the US in 1914, could send for her and their two boys. Unbeknownst to him, Sophie had become pregnant before he left. Because WWII started in Europe, it was several years before he learned that he had become the father of a little girl, Anne, in September of that year. Sophie and the three children went through "terrible hardships, hunger and starvation." Itzik sent money, but it was never received
