Upon the occupation of Austria, at the end of 1938, Stella and her first husband have escaped to Belgium. She was hidden in Brussels by none jewish between 1942 and 1944, living in a constant fear of being deported to be killed by the Nazis. Stella have said that her mother died in an concentration camp and that her first husband has died in the gas chambers. Most of Stella's immidiate family: mother, brother, sister in law, grand mother and five of seven aunts and uncles, were murdered during the holocaust.
