• 'STEPHEN GIFFORD'S first marriage was with Hannah GROVE, in May, 1667. She died Jan. 24, 1670-71, leaving two children, Samuel and Hannah. He married, second, Hannah, daughter of John GALLOP, of Stonington, May 12, 1672. Four children are subsequently recorded to him,--John, Ruth, Stephen, and Aquilla.
• 'The proprietor and his second wife lived together more than half a century, and died the same year.
• Samuel GIFFORD removed to Lebanon in 1692, and there died, Aug. 26, 1714. The tow daughters of 'Stephen, the proprietor', also settled in Lebanon, as the wives of Samuel CALKINS and Jeremiah FITCH. John, Stephen, and Aquilla GIFFORD, sons of the 'first proprietor', were inhabitants of Norwich in 1736.

The Waterman Family, Volume I.  Descendant of Robert Waterman of Marshfield, Massachusetts. by Donald Lines Jacobus.  Edgar F. Waterman. P O Box 3032, Wastville Station, New Haven, Connecticut. 1939.  Page 661-663.  Norwich Vital Records, 1-411, contain the following entries:  Stephen Gifford, ye 3d and Sarah Waterman both of Norwich Were Married together on the 8th Day of April A D 1762.  Sarah ye Daughter of Stephen Gifford ye 3d & Sarah his Wife was Born May 15th 1763.

 The following entries are from Norwich Vital Records, 1-421: Stephen Gifford jur and Sarah Avery both of Norwich were Married together on the 11th day of December A D 1765. Experience ye Daughter of Stephen Gifford jur and of Sarah his Wife was Born September 29th 1766. Gordon, the son of Stephen Gifford jur and of Sarah his Wife was Born July 3rd 1768.

 The Hyde Genealogy [page 101] erroneously combines the above two families, although one Stephen was described as Junior and the other as 3d.  They cannot be identical unless the Stephen who was known as “Senior” was born 28 August 1679, and did not die until 1772 [in his 93rd year], as proved by his will and the date of its probation.  The following brief account of the family will make clear the identity of each Stephen.

 STEPHEN GIFFORD, born about 1641, died 27 November 1724, age 83 [gravestone, Norwich]; married first, May 1667, HANNAH GORE, who died 24 January 1670/1; and second 12 May 1672, HANNAH GALLOP, born at Boston, Massachusetts, 14 August 1644, died at Norwich, 20 January 1724 age 79 [gravestone], daughter of Capt. John and Hannah [Lake] Gallop.

 The will of Stephen Gifford of Norwich, dated 27 March 1718, proved 30 December 1724, named the children of his son Samuell Gifford deceased [the two sons, Samuel and Jeremiah, and the five daughters[: his daughters “hanah the Wife of Samuell Calken” and Ruth the wife of Jeremiah ffitch”; his wife; and his sons John, Stephen and Equella [Probate Rec. GEDCOM Note

The author of Gifford Genealogy, 1626-1896 says he thinks this Stephen is the son of William Gifford of Sandwich, Massachusetts, but gives no reason for this belief. A whole false pedigree has been created for Stephen in an attempt to connect him with (you guessed it) the British nobility. There is not a sliver of a tittle of evidence for this line, and in fact, the William who is given as Stephen's father either didn't exist or was a completely distorted version of William of Sandwich, Massachusetts. There are no sources that say that William of Sandwich had a son named Stephen.
