About Stephen Shelton
Lived in Accomac and Northampton Counties, VA.
This connection is EXTREMELY suspicious, given that there is NO primary or even secondary evidence to support it - just a lot of hearsay, wishful thinking, and personal trees.
There is NO record of any Shelton in any connection with either of the De la Warr governors of Virginia.
There are NO Sheltons on the Hotten Lists (Living & Dead, and Muster).
There is NO record of any Shelton immigrating to Virginia at any time before 1635.
There are NO records of any Sheltons on the Eastern Shore before the late 18th century.
Many of the wishful-thinking accounts contain garbled garbage ("Accomac, Baltimore County, Maryland", forsooth! AccomacK County is on the EASTERN shore of VIRGINIA - Baltimore County, MARYLAND, is on the WESTERN shore and much farther north - up around the city of Baltimore, to be specific.)
Some of the more extravagant accounts claim that Thomas, 3rd Lord De la Warr, was James Shelton's "uncle". None of Lord De La Warr's daughters married a Shelton.
None of the wishful-thinking accounts say anything about Capt. Stephen Charlton's sister Grace, whose three marriages and two widowings are very much part of the Accomack/Northampton historical record.
Many prominent and wealthy people backed the Virginia Companies without ever embarking on shipboard.
