About Stodard Neil
Was born in Dublin Ireland and came to America as a young man and fought in the war of 1812. He settle in Eastern Tennessee. His son Charles came to California in a covered wagon in 1857 and located in Potter Valley in Mendocino County.
Other possible spellings are Strutherd, Stodert, and Strotherd.
Strutherd/Stodart Neil is not mentioned in the will of his father's. His brother Hamilton who had moved to Greene Co. TN and was a Merchant in Greensville and killed himself in 1816. He was going back to Ireland on business and had first went to NC to sell his heard of Horses then on to NY to get passage back to Ireland and was robbed of all his money. The newspaper article says he became so distraught that he crossed the Niagara Bridge into Queenstown and slit his throat! Later Hamilton's children and widow ( who had remarried by that time) took Grimes (Grahams) Neil's executors to Chancery Court in Virginia over thier fathers estate. In this lengthy case there are testimonies from several people and one of them was Strotherd/Stodart who called Hamilton and Grimes his brothers. Strotherd lived past the 1850 census and states on there that he was born in Ireland. It also gives his age making his birthdate 1782. So we know aparently that Patrick was in Ireland then, and buying land in Rockbridge in 1789.
