About Suppo III, duke of Spoleto

-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suppo_II_of_Spoleto - Suppo II (also Suppo III in the familial genealogy) (Italian: Suppone) (died circa 879) was the Duke of Spoleto from 871 until his death. He was the archiminister (archminister) and consiliarius (counsellor) of the Emperor Louis II. In 869-870 he travelled to Constantinople as imperial missus together with Anastasius the Librarian, to negotiate a peace with the Byzantines. Throughout Louis's reign he was the most powerful lay magnate in Italy.

He was a member of the Supponid family and was related to Louis's empress, Engelberga, and also to Suppo, count of Parma, Asti, and Turin, his cousin. After Louis's death, at first he supported Carloman of Bavaria for the Italian throne. After Charles the Bald obtained the crown, he pacified with him but in February 876 he was stripped of the duchy of Spoleto, in favour of the previous duke, Lambert I.

Suppo III died between March 877 (when he is mentioned in a document) and August 879 (when a letter from Pope John VIII laments his death. Suppo's wife was a sister of Eberhard of Friuli and he had a son named Unroch, who in turn had a son named Rudolph.

1. MARINO (-before Jun 872). m ---. The name of Marino´s wife is not known. Marino & his wife had one child:

a) SUPPO [III] (-[878/79]). Marchese of Spoleto. He was archiminister and consiliarius of Emperor Louis II King of Italy[914]. Count Suppo was referred to in 870 as consobrinus of the empress's wife[915]. The Chronicon Casauriensis records that "Suppo Dux filius quondam Maurini" donated property "in loco…Paterno in civitate Pinnensi" to Casauria by charter dated Jun 872[916]. An agreement dated Feb 876 of Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks names "Bosonis…ducis et sacri palatii archiministri atque imperiali missi, Richardi comitis, Walfridi comitis, Liutfridi comitis, Alberici comitis, Supponis comitis, Hardingi comitis, Bodradi comitis palatii, Cuniberti comitis, Bernardi comitis, Airboldi comitis" as present in Italy with the king[917]. He was deposed.

m --- [of Friulia], daughter of Comte UNRUOCH & his wife Engeltrude --- . The wife of Suppo III is shown in Europäische Stammtafeln[918] as the daughter of Unruoch but the primary source on which this is based has not yet been identified. It is probably speculative, based on the name of his son who was called "consanguineus" of Berengar I King of Italy in the latter´s charter dated 12 May 890. Suppo [III] & his wife had one child:

  • i) UNRUOCH (-after 12 May 890). "Berengarius rex" confirmed grants of property "in comitatu Parmense in gastaldiato Bismantino" to "Unroch consanguineus noster filius quondam Supponi…marcionis", at the request of "…Vualtfredi…marchionis", by charter dated 12 May 890[919]. m ---. The name of Unruoch´s wife is not known. Unruoch & his wife had one child:
    • (a) RODOLFO (-after 17 Mar 945). A charter dated 17 Mar 945 records a judgment in favour of "Rodulfus filius quondam Unrochi Comes" relating to a dispute with the bishop of Reggio[920].
