About Surgeon Edward BROWN, Procer
Edward Brown (London, UK 1780 – Caracas, Venezuela 1823+?)
British Surgeon (on the patriot side) with active service during the War of Independence of Venezuela. At the beginning he was part of the Rifles Battalion under Colonel Juan (Johann) Uslar; he arrived at Juangriego, Margarita during April 1819 with the latter chief, and in July of that same year he participated in the campaign that, under the orders of General Rafael Urdaneta, was deployed in Barcelona and Cumana. On June 25th, 1820, he joined the British Legion, and on October 23rd of that same year, he was at Achaguas serving under General Jose Antonio Paez's Apure Regiment, as is registered in the list of recruits of the British Legion then. He is listed as one of the surgeons at the Battle of Carabobo (06-24-1821), serving under Simon Bolivar's orders; after this battle he was assigned to the elite squadron Carabobo Battalion (before they were known as Cazadores Britanicos)); later, serving under the orders of Colonel Judas Tadeo Piñango General Judas Tadeo Joseph María Jesús Piñango Flores, Procer, he participated in the Coro Campaign, that was an important part of the actions unfolding in western Venezuela (1821-1823). Between August and September 1822 he was in active duty at a Hospital for Handicapped Patients; many documents of admission to this hospital have his signature stamped on them.
