About Susanna Hartshorn

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Buck-22

The Hartshorn Families in America,[1] may have embellished the life of Susanna Buck, by stating items that do not seem to be supported by facts.

Susanna's birth has been estimated at about 1620, perhaps in Kent where her employer/master was from. This would make her age 17 when she sailed to New England, age 26 when she married and only 49 when she died.

Susanna Buck was aboard an unnamed ship that sailed from Ipswich to the American plantations in 1637. She came as a "servant" to Henry Bachelour of Dover, brewer, with his wife Martha, and three other servants: John Bucke, Samuel Taylor, Marjorie Walker (the reading of the last was unclear.) The term servants in this usage included apprentices, but it is doubtful that Susanna would have been an apprentice.[2]

Nov. 1645. "Henrye Bachelour v. Susan Bucke. Slander. Verdict for defendant."[3]

Sep 1646 "Susan Buck v. Henry Bachelour. For detaining goods."[3]

It is unfortunate that the court record is so abbreviated. Much might have been revealed by a more thorough record.

Susanna married Thomas Hartshorne shortly after. Their first child was born in 1648.

Susannah, wife of Thomas Hartshorne died 18 March 1659/60, in Reading, Massachusetts.[4] Thomas remarried.

Children of Susanna Buck & Thomas Hartshorn, all born in Reading, Massachusetts. All spelled Hartshorne in the records.[4], [5]

  1. Thomas Hartshorne was born October 30, 1648; married in 1671 Hannah Goodwin who died in July, 1673. [4] Removed to Haverhill by 1677. [5] He married second, Sarah Swan. [6]
  2. John Hartshorne , born May 6, 1650. [4] married Ruth Swan on September 19,1672 at Haverhill, Massachusetts. [7]
  3. Joseph Hartshorne, born July 2, 1652 [4]: married Sarah ___. [5]
  4. Benjamin Hartshorne born April 18, 1654; died at Reading on May 3, 1694; married first in 1682, Mary Thompson, daughter of George, who died that year; married second Elizabeth Browne, daughter of John and Elizabeth in 1684. [5] [4]
  5. Jonathan Hartshorne born August 20, 1656. [4]
  6. David Hartshorne born October 18, 1657 [4]; married Rebecca Batcheldor on Mar. 15, 1683. [5] [6]
  7. Susannah Hartshorne born March 2, 1659/60 [4]; died at Watertown in May 1718; married first John Devereux; married second at Marblehead, Stephen Parker of Andover. [8]

A first son named Thomas, b. 3 July 1646, is listed by some secondary sources,[1] however he was not recorded in the Reading town vital records, and would not have been mentioned in probate records. He also would have been born prior to Thomas and Susanna's marriage.

  • from FindAGrave:

"Susanna was the daugther of James Buck from Kent England. Susannah came in the Hercules 1657 in the family of Henry of Ipswich, Massachusetts. She was with that family until her time was out when, at which time she got married to Thomas Hartshorn in 1640 in Reading, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. To this union, 7 children were born."

She was apprenticed to Henry Bachelour, Brewer, of Dover. He was of the Parish of St. George, Canterbury, aged ca 35 on April 15, 1637, when a license was granted him for marriage with Martha Wilson of the same Parish. On a passenger list of 1637 is Henry Bachelour of Dover, brewer, and wife Martha and servants: John Buche, Susan Bucke, Samuel Taylor, Marjorie Walker (reading doubtful). Henry Bachelour settled in Ipswich. He died February 2, 1678/9. Martha died April 4, 1686 at Ipswich (but possibly Reading). As the Bachelours were friends, Susanna was probably brought up in that society. In Essex Co. Court Records, we find that after Susanna came out of her apprenticeship, Henry Bachelour sued her for slander, but lost that suit. She retailiated by suing him for detaining her baggage.

From Derick Hartshorn, p. 15: "She was apprenticed to Henry Bachelor, brewer, of Dover....On a passenger list of 1637 is Henry Bachelour of Dover, brewer, and wife Martha and servants: John Bucke, Susan Bucke, Samuel Taylor, Marjorie Walker, (reading doubtful). ... As the Bachelors were friends, Susanna was probably brought up in that society. In Essex Co. Court Records, we find that after Susanna came out of her apprenticeship, Henry Bachelor sued her for slander, but lost that suit. She retaliated by suing him for detaining her baggage."
