At Cradock he [John Montgomery] applied himself to learning a trade. It was here that he met Susanna, daughter of Jan Benjamin Van Zyl, who farmed at Grootfontein north of Cradock. They were married in December 1822. The marriage lasted until Susanna’s death 46 years later. The young couple (he was 19, she 17) built themselves a house [in Cradock]. In mid – 1824 he began a career he was to pursue on and off for the rest of his life – that of a ‘smous’ or travelling trader. On his first [trip], accompanied by Susanna and their first child, Sara, Montgomery trekked in his wagon as far north as the Orange River.

Mrs Montgomery, wife of our respected townsman, Mr John Montgomery departed this life on Wednesday last (19th February), at the age of 64 years, after a short illness, leaving a husband, at present absent from home, and an immense number of descendants to lament her loss. The deceased was well known and much respected at Cradock, Burghersdorp, Smithfield and other places at which, at different periods she and her husband had resided. The surviving husband and family have our sincerest sympathy in their sad bereavement.
