SUSANNA LECKIE

Susanna Leckie is the daughter of John Leckie of Newlands. Her father was the brother of Michael Leckie of Greenside. [National Records of Scotland, Particular Register of Sasines for the Sheriffdom of Lanark, 1709-19, reference RS42/12/337]

Her Father'sTestament Dative and Inventory

The testament dative and inventory of the deceased John Leckie of Newlands was given up by his daughter Susanna Leckie: "only & neirest of kine to the defunt", and her husband, Francis Dunlop of that Ilk, for his interest, who were recognised as executors to her fathers: "goods geir & debts" by the Commissary Court of Glasgow. The inventory of his possessions shows John Leckie of Newlands had already given up his right to one half of the contents of his home before he died: "Imprimis the defunt had perteaning to him the tyme of his deceis the half of the insight & plenishing of his house undisposed be him". The household contents referred to were probably given to his widow, Beathea Crawford, identified by her surname only in his testament, who is said to have owed four hundred and thirty-three pounds, six shillings and eight pence to her husband's estate for: "guids belonging to the defunct". Other monies due to the deceased was one thousand four hundred and forty-nine pounds, twelve shilings (presumed to be pounds Scots rather than pounds Sterling): "in part payment of tua hundred punds Sterling money subscrived be him in the Afficanian books of the Affricanian Company of Scotland trading to Affrica & the Indies". David Dunlop, goldsmith in Edinburgh, acted himself as cautioner for Susanna Leckie and her husband, Francis Dunlop of that Ilk, and confirmation was granted to the spouses on 18 September 1707.
