Susannah Grigg

Susannah is a daughter of Davis and Susannah (nee unknown) Stockton. Davis was a son of Thomas and Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton of Albemarle County, Virginia.

She was NOT a daughter of Davis and Elizabeth (nee Whiteside) Stockton. He was a son of Samuel and Prudence (nee unknown) Stockton as shown here at Geni.

Davis Stockton, born about 1760, was a son of Rachel Allen and Thomas Stockton, Sr., and a grandson of Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761) of Albemarle County, Virginia. His parents, Thomas and Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton, were Quakers and owned land on both sides of Mechum's River near the town of Batesville. It appears that in about 1784 Davis married Susannah (nee ___?___ ) in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Sometime after 13 March 1787 Davis Stockton moved to the area of Rutherford County that in 1841 became Cleveland County, North Carolina, where he lived until his death. He is not shown in the 1810 census, so it appears that he died sometime before 1810, maybe in about 1805.

Davis 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton is shown on the 1790 and 1800 census in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Also living in Tryon / Rutherford / Burke Counties was his first cousin Davis Stockton (c.1744-1831), a son of Samuel and Prudence (nee unknown) Stockton.

This is NOT the father of above Sarah, Jemima, and Susannah Stockton.

In the 1820 census the Davis 3 (Samuel 2, Davis 1) Stockton family are shown living in adjacent Burke County, North Carolina. The 1820 Burke County Davis Stockton married his cousin Elizabeth Whiteside. The 1820 (widow) Susannah Stockton was the widow of Davis Stockton, a son of Thomas and Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton. 1820 Burke County Davis Stockton, a son of Samuel, died not die until 1831, so Susannah Stockton is not his widow.

In 1841 Rutherford County was split and the eastern 1/3 became Cleveland County, North Carolina.

Samuel Stockton and family, including son Davis Stockton (c.1744-1831) who married Elizabeth Whiteside, were living in North Carolina by 1774. The 1850 and 1880 census show Sarah (nee Stockton) Pruett as born 1785 in VIRGINIA.
