Susannah Duke Sherman, the wife of Zachariah Nance I., was a very fleshy woman, her usual weight being over three hundred pounds. She died sitting in her chair, in 1780. Children of Susannah and Zachariah are: James Nance, who was married four times. He died circa 1804, leaving a wife and one son. His widow married a Mr. Porter, of Richmond, Virginia; John Nance married a second wife, and died in 1806; Elizabeth Nance married John Hall, manager of Holt's Forge, in New Kent county, Virginia, afterwards moved below Yorktown, in Warrick County. John Hall served under Washington in the defeat of Braddock in 1755; William Nance married Miss Parrish. He died in 1806, leaving a wife and several children; Susannah Nance was born in 1758. She married Stephen Shell and adopted a child that she named Zachariah Henry Nance. Zachariah Nance II, was born May 5, 1760, served in the Continental Army at Williamsburg and was twice married.
