About Susannah Pullman
Susannah Williams aged 18 came to NZ in 1840 on the "London" a NZ Company ship. Her occupation is listed as servant or sempstress. She left Gravesend on the 13th August 1840, arrived in Wellington on the 12th December 1840 and camped on Petone Beach. Her sister and brother-in-law John and Mary Symonds and 4 children were also on the "London".
The ship London left Gravesend (19 Aug 1840) to Wellington (12 Dec 1840) under Captain Henry Shuttleworth (105 days) with 43 cabin passengers and 193 immigrants.
When the ship London, 700 tons, Captain Henry Shuttleworth, arrived at Wellington, on December 12, 1840, she was the largest vessel that had up to that time entered the port, or probably that had visited New Zealand. She took 121 days over the voyage, having sailed from Gravesend on August 13th, 1840. Among her passengers, who numbered 228, were Mr F A Carrington, chief surveyor of the Plymouth Company; Mr J T Wicksteed, who afterwards became a leading resident at Wanganui; and Mr A de Bathe Brandon, who was so well known in Wellington for many years. Although the Plymouth Company was a separate company, with its own officers, it was really an offshoot of the New Zealand Company, and, as a matter of fact, acquired land from the latter, or rather acquired such title as the Company possessed. Eventually the two companies amalgamated. This fine frigate-built ship had been turned out from the dockyards for the conveyance of passengers to and from Calcutta.
On emigration papers she gave her address as 1 Eliza Place, Elizabeth St, Pimlico (London, England). Her father John Williams, engineer (possibly a former farmer from Wales) and her mother Ann Williams (nee Begley).
William and Susan were married in Wanganui in 1841 (on the same day as their first child was baptised) and lived there until about 1843. The births of their first six children were registered in the Wellington district in Nov 1849. Susan signed with a cross.
The Pullmans shifted to Gisborne (or Turanga as it was called then) about 1850 and then later to Auckland. A census of Gisborne was done in Feb 1851 the entry for the Pullman family is "Pullman, trader, his wife and six children".
Place of death was West Queen Street. Until 1883 Swanson Street was known as West Queen Street.
Burial: 21 Nov 1854, Wesleyan Burial Ground, Auckland Cause of Death: Cancer Medical Information: Undertaker, Alexander Marshall, Auckland
