Document: Dec. 8, 1981 Letter from Carol Ann (Van Ormer)Uyak to Curtis & Suzanne Bard including following enclosure *1.

More than a half-century ago Dale Van Ormer's parents gave him a set of toy soldiers which became of such interest that the original gift inspired a lifelong hobby that now includes more than 14,000 individual miniatures. Mr. and Mrs. Van Ormer have been visiting their daughter and her husband, Maj. and Mrs. Herman Uyak and their grandchildren Dave, a third grader in Mrs. Joy Whitlock's room and Jeff, fifth grader in Mrs. Marilyn Buck's room, both at Rivers, and Sue Ellen, Norhteast, seventh grader and Mark, Altus High School sophmore. Dave mentioned to his teacher about his grandfather's toy soldiers and a parade group he brought for them to see. An invitation to show the soldiers to Dave's classmates was followed by a half-hour presentation over ACTV, Channel 2, which although unannounced, attracted wide attention. This morning the Van Ormer's and the parade miniatures, left for San Antonio. Texas, where they will visit another daughter before returning to their home in Bardstown, KY, USA. Plans already are underway for a return visit in April when Van Ormer had promised to bring his most famous group, the complete coronation parade of Queen Elizabeth II authentically complete to the final detail, in uniform, equipment, and place in the parade. What about the wedding parade of Prince Plillip and Princess Diane "I'll bring the carriage in which they rode," Van Ormer said. "Some of the officials in that parade were in plain uniforms that do not make an interesting spectacle, but it is a project with possibilities." Although his collection is the first introduction of many to authentic military miniatures, Van Ormer is quick to point out that hobby began thousands of years ago. Egyptian relics reveal remains in precious metals and ceramics. The Greeks became masters of the art, duplicating famous military personages and battles. Many other nations have both historical relic miniatures of the past and avid collectors of the present. Van Ormer had been able to spend more time developing his collection since his retirement as a construction engineer. Since 1971 when their children were grown, Mrs. Van Ormer has taken an active part in the hobby. Some of the collection was purchased, but many of today's miniatures were cast or completed by the Van Ormers. Particularly interesting among the group which they brought for their grandchildren to see this visit are Scots in authentic Kilts. Mrs. Van Ormer researched each tartan and has the exact colors and plaids for each. Toronto, ON, Canada, is the city where the outstanding collectors of the world assemble for shows, Van Ormer said. "We usually get there about every other year." They also have shown at conventions in a number of major cities particularly along the east coast. This was their first visit to Oklahoma and they like the state and the people. Every possible minute has been spent in exploring the area, noting the wide variety of plants and trees. Cotton fields such as found here were a new experience. Picture of Dale Van Ormer with miniatures & caption:
