About Sybil de Mitford
The Mitford family held land west of Morpeth in Anglian times. At the Conquest the head of the family was Robert, and when he died he left all to his only child, Sibella. She was ordered by William I to marry Sir Robert Bertram, one of his knights. It was a convenient way of granting him a barony. Although Sibella was the last of the mainstream Mitfords, there must have been cadet branches to carry on the name for it crops up again nearly four hundred years later.
