About TAN Hay Kwan, 陳夏覌
Tan Hay Kwan's mainland Chinese roots may be traced back to his paternal ancestor Tan Cheng, a 7th-century governor of Chiang Chew in Fukien province during the early Tang dynasty.
As a young man, Hay Kwan was one of several brothers who sailed from Fukien across the 'Southern Ocean' (南洋 or Nanyang) in search of a better life. He became a junk owner who plied his trade between Macassar in the Indonesian Celebes (now Sulawesi) and Malacca, before finally settling in Malacca around 1770.
Putting down his own roots in Malacca, Hay Kwan eventually died there and was buried alongside his wife Lee Chye Neo at Bukit Temporong.

Tan Hay Kwan came from Province f Fujian, District of Nam Cheng Kwi (南靖縣), Village of Teck Hong (竹黃) Siah in Chiang Chew (泉州) prefecture in Fujian province to Malacca betweem 1771 to 1781
