Harmen enlisted in the Marine Corps and was serving as a TSgt. with MAG-21 on Wake Island on 8 Dec 1941 when the Japanese attacked. When the Marines surrendered on 23 Dec 1941, Harmon became a Prisoner of War and was shipped to the Osaka POW camp where he died about three years later.
