Tanya Jordaan (2007 - 2012)

Brief overview:

Tanya (5), perished in a home fire, along with her sister, Salome (11), and step-brother Armand (2), in Randfontein, GP, on 4th June 2012 in the early hours of the morning. Her elder sister Adri (14) sustained burns to 87 percent of her body when a fire swept through the family's home. The fire is believed to have been from a burning candle. Tanya's father, Jaco (34) rushed Adri to Leratong Hospital in critical condition in his truck, as emergency services were slow to respond. Adri later passed from the severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Jaco owns a car workshop in Randfontein, and his wife, Suzie, had been sharing their home with Jaco's ex-wife, Nicolene, and her current husband, Tommy Dickson for some time, due to financial reasons. That night, there were four adults and six children staying in the house. Kallie Hoffman, who worked for Jaco, lived in an outside room in the yard. When the fire broke out around 05h00, Kallie woke up to Adri's cries. He managed to unfasten the burglar bars and get her out of the burning room.

Jaco, along with several witnesses, said that emergency services were very slow to respond. Hence Jaco himself rushed Adri to the ER. Not only this - the West Rand Municipality fire brigade services admitted that there was inadequate access to water in the area, and they had to leave to refill their water tanks. They only returned half an hour later - by which time the house had almost burned to the ground.

In a country where 1.6 million residents of Soweto, Johannesburg do not pay for their electricity, and millions of people connect illegally to electrical substations and transformers around the country - the Jordaan's electricity supply had been cut off, and their electrical fuse box removed - because Jaco could not pay the full amount that month, and only managed to pay a portion of the account. Jaco told the media that he planned to take the municipality to court, “to prevent the same thing from happening to somebody else's family”.
