About Thankful-Louise Thérèse le Grain

Captured in the 1702 Deerfield Massacre and Kidnapping.

Remained in Canada Being a child in Puritan New England, especially a girl, was not that encouraging. Many young people stayed in Canada -- some as Indians, some as French -- and raised their families there.

As the result of a war, on 11-3-1704 her entire family was deported to Deerfield, MA.



Thankful was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts. In 1704, there was a raid of Deerfield during Queen Anne's War on Feb 29 the village was attacked by French and Native American forces under the command of Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville. The forces burned part of the town, killed 47 villages and kidnapped 112- all of whom had to treck 300 miles, in the cold and snow to Montreal. Thankful and her family were among the captives, once released from captivity, Thankful, her sister Abigail and two brothers decided to stay in Quebec- her father and mother returned to Deerfield.
