About The Most Reverend Henri-Marie Dubreil de Pontbriand, PSS
Overview
Dubriel de Pontbriand was the 6th bishop of Québec. He studied theology with the Sulpicians and was ordained in 1731 in Paris, France. He was consecrated bishop of Québec in 1741. He left for Canada soon after. Once in Canada, he became engaged in a lawsuit with the nuns of the general hospital, who claimed the episcopal palace as part of the legacy that Saint-Vallier, second bishop of Québec, had left them. He obtained a royal decree confirming his possession of the palace. In 1744 Dubriel reduced the number of holidays observed by the local people from 33 to 14. His diocese at that time was large - half of North America. The English captured Québec in 1759. Dubreil was broken hearted, but accepted "Gods Will". He regulated the affairs of his church to the best of his abilities and recommended his clergy to submit to the new order of things. he then retired to Montréal. The grief he suffered over the loss of Québec contributed to his already existing illness and he died a few days later.
