About The Right Honorable Edward Lucas

THE RT HON EDWARD LUCAS JP DL MP, of Castle Shane, born in 1787, who represented County Monaghan in parliament; high sheriff, 1818; Under-Secretary of State for Ireland, 1841-6; privy counsellor, 1845.

Edward Lucas (1787-1871), Castle Shane, County Monaghan, was born on 27 September 1787. In 1812 he married Anne, daughter of William Ruxton, Ardee House, County Louth.

Lucas was a conservative M.P. for County Monaghan 1834-41. He was appointed under secretary for Ireland 1841-6 and proved an able executive and chief support of the De Grey administration.

In 1834 he was elected a life member of the Royal Dublin Society (R.D.S.), his proposers being Lord Downshire and J. L. Naper.

He was a vice-president of the Agricultural Society of Ireland 1835-41. He was an Irish privy councillor from 1845. Lucas was helpful to the R.D.S. in 1841-2 in restoring the parliamentary grant removed by the previous whig administration in 1840-1. He was not otherwise active in the Society, although he was recorded as attending a general meeting on 24 February 1853.

He died on 12 November 1871. The representatives of his estate owned 9,955 acres of land in County Monaghan in 1876.
