About Thomas Andrew, Esq., Sheriff of Northamptonshire

"Thomas, the sheriff of Northamptonshire, officiated at the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1587, and on the orders of Elizabeth I disposed of her remains secretly in Fortheringhay Castle, where they remained for many years until exhumed and buried in Westminster. Catholics were deeply embittered, not only with Mary's death, but especially over the way her remains were treated. This became a concern for the Andrews family's safety. The Charwelton family lines became Puritans at this time, along with the Knightley family, as did many families in the Midlands, which put them at odds with the Church of England and the Crown. Political persecution followed, and many in the family lost land, influence, and wealth. England entered decades of political, social, and military chaos that, according to the Rolls of Parliament, resulted in the execution of a William and Eusebius Andrews."

Sheriff of Northamptonshire in 1568 and 1587, in which capacity he was unexepectedly caught up in national events when called upon to manage the secret execution of Mary, Queen of Scots at Fotheringhay Castle; for his courtesy to the Queen she gave him a crucifix before going to the block; his function included procuring two surgeons to embalm the queen's body, and burying her heart and other internal organs 'in a secret place known only to himself' - something he is said to have done so successfully in the cellars of the castle that the burial site has never been discovered.
