Thomas Avent met his future wife while attending boarding school at the old Warrenton Academy. After graduating from Warrenton Academy, he attended the University of North Carolina. [Alumni records of the University of North Carolina]. His occupation was listed as a planter. While a second year student at the University of North Carolina, his father died. He was sixteen-years-old at the time. After the death of his father, he acquired most of his father's estate, and during his lifetime Aventon flourished. He owned over one hundred slaves. 1843, George Gardner to Thomas W. Avent, Nash Co., NC This Indenture made this 28th of April A. D. one thousand eight hundred and forty three between George Gardner of the county of Nash and State of North Carolina of the one part and Thomas W. Avent of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the Said George Gardner, for and in consideration of the Sum of Two hundred and thirty two dollars in hand paid by the Said Thomas W. Avent at the time of executing these presents the rect. whereof is acknowledged hath granted bargained Sold conveyed aliened and confirmed and by these presents doth grant, bargain Sell convey alien & confirm unto the said Thomas W. Avent his heirs and assigns a certain Tract or parcel of land in the County of Nash and State of North Carolina bounded as follows (viz): begining at a corner black Jack formally Said Avents & John Derrings corner now Said Avents & Derring thence South 1 ½ deg. West 129 pole to a corner red oak formally Said Gardners and Avents corner thence South 88 deg. West 140 to a pine formally Sally Avents line now Thomas Avents line thence North 81 pole to a black Jack corner thence South 84 deg. East 68 pole to a hickory near the road thence North 52 ½ deg. East 96 pole to the first Station containing Eighty Acres to have and to hold the Said land & premises & all & singularly the tenements hereditarments, woods, ways, mines, minerals, improvements & appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said Thomas W. Avent his heirs and assigns to his and their own use and behoof in fee simple forever and the Said Thomas W. Avent his heirs and assigns shall and will warrant and forever defend from the lawful claim or claims of any & all persons whatsoever.
