This extremely frustrating site www.geni.com is [ once again ] totally wrong, but also completely impossible to correct - Mary is his mother, NOT a step-moter, and John is NOT his half-brother, but a younger brother
Thomas was the first child of Cornelius Carew and Mary Looby.
Listed as then a Victualler in Church St, Tipperary, Thomas was married, aged 26 [ on the Marriage record but 29 according to both the 1901 and 1911 Census - such differences being very common ], on Feb 2, 1894 in RC Golden Parish, to a neighbor in the same Parish of Kilfeakle, Julia Morrissey, 26, of Dromline, daughter of John Morrissey, a farmer, and Ellen [ nee Barlow ].
It seems likely that he only inherited the Kilfeakle farm much later - maybe only when his father died.
In Griffiths Valuation of Ireland [ 1851 ] an earlier Thomas Carew Snr has 32 Acres and Thomas Jnr has 28 Acres, while Thomas Snr also has Customs of the Fair, at Kilfeakle, a Townland which has 1,208 Acres, with the Estate of B. Bunbury as their Landlord, and on April 20, 1848, Thomas Carew is in Kilfeakle Townland, while in the earlier 1827 Tithe Applotment Books, there is a Thomas Carew and a brother listed for Kilfeakle.
The 1766 Religion Census lists a Benjamen Bunbury and a William Bunbury at Kilfeakle, both Protestants, as was Francis Mathew - the Mathew family of Thomastown Demesne in Kilfeakle Parish, from which came the Roman Catholic Temperance preacher, Father Theobald Mathew 1790-1856 of the Mendicant Order of Capuchin Franciscans, based in Cork. He began his campaign on April 10, 1838, due to the influence of Non-Conformist friends, and in 6 years, the State Revenue from Spirits fell from £1.4m to £0.8m, along with a major fall in crime. He also was equally successful in his crusade among the Irish population in Britain.
