Lieut. Thomas COLBY was born on 24 JUN 1756 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. (SOURCE: Early Vital Records of Essex County, Massachusetts to 1850 for Amesbury.) He died on 25 DEC 1848 at Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Thomas and Susannah came to Bow, NH, 30 March, 1775. He enlisted in the Northern Army in Captain Nay's company, July 1776/ In 1818, Thomas Colby of Bow, NH, aged 62 years, deposed: that he enlisted 6 January 1776, under Captain Samuel Richards for one year. He served at Winter Hill, Albany, New York; Montreal Sorel, and St. John's Canada, Mount Independence, Vermont; Ticonderoga, New York; Pennsylvania; and back to Albany. Only 16 out of 70 who enlisted with him were living when he was discharged. Jacob S. Colby testified that Thomas Colby enlisted "in my father's home," and he enlisted with him. Thomas's pension was approved and Mr. Colby received a pension until his death in 1848.
