Email from John L. Humber (jlhumber@@intrex.net) on 2/8/97 --

Well Hello Cousin Bobby!

How interesting theworld gets to be these days. Without the ROOTS

Registry how long would it have taken for us to discover each other?

Your genealalogy is most interesting. I have no nowledge about any John

Humber earlier than the one who married Betty Meeks. He is the first I

know about. However, that does not mean there wasn't one, of course.

You mentioned the Humber Bible at the Virginia Library. That is

Elizabeth Christian's Bible (Thomas Baskett, 1752). It descended through

the Cox side of the family and was on loan to the University of Virginia

for a time by Josephine McPherson Cox of Charlottesville, VA,when I feel

certain it was photographed. However that branch of the family decided

that my father was thepersons they wished to have it passed to at

Joesephine's death. My father died before that transfer was made. So

one memorable day in the early 1970's my wife and children and I got in

the car, drove to Charlottesville and brought Elizabeth Christian's

Bible home with us. Needless to say, a copy of the two pages on which

she wrote down her family's information will be in the mail to you

tomorrow. Also my great grandfather, who was raised in part by Elizabeth

Christian at Air Hill, drew a pencil picture of her which he kept in his

Bible.

One thing emerges as really interesting from your nformation with what

I have discovered in KY, however. I went to Crab Orchard to see if I

could find some Humbers a couple of years ago. I found Joe Humber in

Harrodsburg, KY and from him I found several others in Lexington and in

Crab Orchard. Bernie Fish in Crab Orchard took me up to the Crab Orchard

Graveyard and where the oldest Humber grave there was for a Thomas Cole

Humber, b. 5 Jan 1804, d. 20 Jan 1833, barely 29 years old. He seems to

be the patriarch of that branch judging from their information.I was not

able to tie him in with the Air Hill Humbers until I came home and

looked in Elizabeth Christian's Bible. There she recorded the birth of

two grandchildren. One was Thomas Cole Humber, b. 5 Jan 1804,as the son

of Charles Christian Humber. That's right CHARLES CHRISTIAN HUMBER.

Did Charles Christian Humber have a previous marriage in Virginia from

which issued Thomas Cole and then moved on into AL after his first wife

died? Did he move to Crab Orchard and left there after the death of a

first wife? After Thomas Cole was on his own? Do you know when 4

Charles Christian married Lettice Hammon?

In my lineage down from 4 William, you have one too many people in the

line. This number of generations could normally be expected I suppose,

but 4 William's son, 5 Oliver Perry Humber (my didn't our family go in

for those famous names though )married three time and outlived the first

two. We come down from his eldest son from the third marriage,6 Robert

Lee Humber, Sr., my grandfather. His son, 7 Robert Lee Humber, Jr. was my

father and I make it down as 8 John Leslie Humber.

As you will see on the pages I'll send you the "illegible" name of John

and Elizabeth's children was Lucy - but it is quite legible.

Some of the other dates don't mesh either, but you can see what you can

make of it all with the data in your book. I have a great deal on the

Humbers, especiall our line, of course, and the Georgia branch. Robert

Christian Humber was the patriach of that branch down there and I have a

good deal on them.

Your mother lives in Athens, you say. My wife's sister taught at the

University there for 30 years in the Home Economics Dept. and the dean

of that dept married a good friend of my father's and mine - Dr. Joe

Pou. I wonder if by some chance she might know him.

Well things do get interesting. On the surface it seems that you might

have some family in KY who are closer to you than me. As you probably

did, I found the Land Grant card in the VA library on the net, not only

for John Humber of Goochland, but also for John Humber in KY. on Casey

Creek which flows into the Green River. I located Casey Creek and am

sending you a map showing its location and Crab Orchard, KY.

Well, enough for now, I guess. We'll keep plugging away. What fun.

Best wishes,

John
