  • Sir Richard Grenville (15 June 1542 – 10 September 1591) (alias Greynvile, Greeneville, Greenfield etc.) lord of the manors of Stowe, Kilkhampton in Cornwall and of Bideford in Devon, was an English sailor who as captain of the Revenge, died at the Battle of Flores (1591), fighting heroically against overwhelming odds, and refusing to surrender his ship to the far more numerous Spanish. .... etc.
  • Richard Grenville was the eldest son and heir of Sir Roger Grenville (d.1545), who was captain of the Mary Rose when it sank in Portsmouth Harbour in 1545, by his wife Thomasine Cole, daughter of Thomas Cole of Slade.[1] Thomasine survived her husband and remarried to Thomas Arundell.[1] The ancient Grenville family were lords of the manors of Bideford in Devon and of Stowe, Kilkhampton in Cornwall. He was a cousin of Sir Walter Raleigh and the privateer and explorer Humphrey Gilbert.

"The questionable supplementary content included in the 1872 publication of the 1620 Devon Visitation. Margaret and probably also Jane being additional daughters, I suspect, of Thomas Cole and his wife Joane Hill. Not daughters of Thomasine, which this suggests. I believe the connecting lines have been misdrawn and it is a simple transcription error".

Supporting this statement above:

1. See Fursland extract which says Margaret Cole wife of John Fursland is the daughter of Thomas Cole of Slade.

2. Devon, a son and heir, Thomas, who married, first, Joan, daughter of William Stourton, esq., and having no issue by her he married, secondly, Joane, daughter and heiress to John Hill of Buckland Touzsaints, in the county of Devon, esq., and died 31 January 1541 (32 Henry VIII.) leaving three daughters, and three sons.

1. Margaret = Thomas Southcote, of Southcote and = John Fursland of Bickington 2. Joane = Hugh Hill of Heath, = Eobert Dowrish of Heath - Barton 3. Thomasine = Sir Eoger Grenville, Esq 4. William= Elizabeth Champernon of Mowbury 5. Richard = Alice Greenfield alias Grenville of Exeter 6. Robert = John Evelyn of Kingston Upon Thames 7. Jane? =

I believe Jane is questionable in the Cole family tree she could be Joane. The supplement is not signed by the head of the family.
